Day 1:      Shindzela Tented Safari Camp, Timbavati Private Nature Reserve

South Africa

This vast country is undoubtedly one of the most culturally and geographically diverse places on earth. Fondly known by locals as the ‘Rainbow Nation’, South Africa has 11 official languages and its multicultural inhabitants are influenced by a fascinating mix of African, Asian and European cultures. Spend your days discovering gourmet restaurants, impressive art and nightlife scenes and fine beaches of Cape Town; enjoying a typical local braai (barbecue) in the Soweto township; browsing the bustling Indian markets in Durban; or sampling some of the world’s finest wines at the myriad wine estates dotted around the picturesque Cape Winelands. Due to its rich and turbulent history there are plenty of historical attractions to explore including the Zululand battlefields of KwaZulu-Natal, the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg and Robben Island, just off the coast of Cape Town. Above all else, South Africa’s attraction lies in its remarkably untamed wilderness with its astonishing range of wildlife roaming freely across massive unfenced game reserves such as the world famous Kruger National Park. With all of this variety on offer, it is little wonder that South Africa has fast become Africa’s most popular tourist destination.

Timbavati Private Nature Reserve

Timbavati Private Game Reserve shares a common, unfenced border with Kruger Park and encompasses many exclusive private lodges. The region is best known for the ‘white lions of Timbavati’, two unusually pale lion cubs discovered here in the 1970s, their colour due to a rare recessive gene.
The Timbavati is a “Big Five” Game Reserve: Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Elephant and Buffalo roam freely as do many more species of predators and antelopes. Over 40 mammal species and 350 bird species have been identified within the area. This, together with the abundant variety of flora, the tranquillity and the natural beauty of the land, ensures an adventure to be remembered. It is said to have the densest giraffe population in the world.

Overnight: Shindzela Tented Safari Camp          View iBrochure

We know that an African safari is a very special experience – we invite you to join us for a journey of discovery on a wildlife safari. Shindzela is a small wilderness camp, and hosts a maximum of 16 guests. We focus on game drives in open 4×4 vehicles (day & night drives), and walking safaris.

Our walking safaris and game drives place an emphasis on understanding the wild environment, and tracking and viewing animals in their natural surroundings. We are able to drive off road in search of African predators and Big Five animals.

Situated in the Timbavati Nature Reserve, and part of the Greater Kruger National Park, our tented accommodation consist of 8 canvas tents set on wooden decks with a little porch, each with their own en-suite bathroom (shower, hand basin, flush toilet). Each tent has got a mosquito net over the bed, and canvas flaps for windows also lined with mosquito nets.

Our camp runs on Solar powered lights in each tent and dining room area, and your hot/cold shower is regulated by our gas geysers. Shindzela Tented Safari Camp offers a back to basics, affordable Kruger safari holiday, without compromising on important safari experiences; the thrill of viewing African wildlife, marveling at a beautiful sunset, or relaxing around the camp fire with a drink.

Head off to the wine country via the N2 to the heart of South Africa’s wine industry, Stellenbosch; boasting great beauty and culture that is steeped in South African history. Walk down the canal-lined avenues, in the shade of giant oak trees and beautifully preserved historic buildings. With the sheer vastness of wine estates on offer, we are truly spoilt for choice when we enjoy our first wine tasting of the day at the Waterford Estate.

Travel over the scenic Helshoogte Pass to the town of Franschhoek, historically dating back to the 17th century when the French Huguenots arrived. Billed as the Gourmet Capital of South Africa, this charming town, in a most picturesque valley, retains a French Huguenot style.

We enjoy a wine tasting before returning to the bustle of city life after an enthralling day in the countryside, arriving back at the hotels at approximately 13:30 for morning departures and 17:30 for afternoon departures.

Optional: Seal Island boat trip (seasonal) (not incl. in cost). On through Chapman’s Peak, one of the world’s most breathtaking coastal drives, to Cape Point and the Good Hope Nature Reserve, which has magnificent fynbos vegetation, birdlife, endemic antelope species and zebra, historic lighthouses and shipwrecks. Cape Point is perceived to be the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. It is also called the Cape of Good Hope and feared by sailors.

We go on to historic Simon’s Town, a village with charming Victorian architecture, a naval base and a large penguin colony at the beautiful Boulders Beach. Boulders Penguin Colony (included in cost) is home to a growing colony of the vulnerable African Penguin. Situated below Table Mountain, Devil’s Peak and Lion’s Head, Cape Town offers a rich cultural and industrial heritage. Including all the `must-sees` of any Cape Town day tour, this option is a geographical and cultural extravaganza, showing you Cape Town, from its historical beginnings to the dazzling modern shopping malls of the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront.

The tour commences with a ferry trip across the bay to Robben Island. (weather permitting). From the 17th to the 20th centuries, Robben Island served as a place of banishment, isolation and imprisonment. Today it is a World Heritage Site and museum, a poignant reminder to the newly democratic South Africa and of the price paid for freedom. The excursion includes a return ferry to the island, a bus tour on the island and of the prison.

In the city itself enjoy a drive through Bo-Kaap to discover how the Malay slaves influenced the culture, food and aesthetics of this beautiful city and its people. Enjoy the panoramic views over the city with Robben Island lying sleepily in Table Bay. Also get a bird’s eye view over the Atlantic Seaboard.

Return to the city bowl area to the Company Gardens. Enjoy a walk through the garden and a visit to the SA Museum. This is followed by a visit to the Castle of Good Hope. Built between 1666 and 1679 by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) as a maritime replenishment station, the Castle of Good Hope is the oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa.

The drive through the city centre would also take you past the Houses of Parliament, the Grand Parade and City Hall from where Nelson Mandela first addressed South Africans after his release in February 1990.

Table Mountain Hiking

Table Mountain has hundreds of walking and hiking options.  As with hiking anywhere in the world hiking here has its dangers, so be prepared and tell someone where you are going.  If you tick the Walk/Hike option under Activities – Outdoor some of the options available will populate the map.  If you click Show Route on the selected hike’s popup box, the route will be displayed on the Map.

Sea kayaking and Cape Point Tour

There is no better way to experience the False Bay coastline other than a morning sea  kayaking experience. The latter part of the day sees you visiting the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve and Cape Point, then on via Chapman’s Peak Drive to Hout Bay and ending at your hotel in the late afternoon.

Seakayak with Penguins

One of the most unique places in the world – a penguin colony in suburban Cape Town! And the best way to see it is from the water. The kayak trip leaves from Simon’s Town Waterfront and we paddle past the Naval Harbour and out to Boulder’s Beach to see the penguins. If the time and tide is right we may stop on a beach for a swimming break and will generally be able to get a close up look at penguins on the rocks nearby.

Please note that the drive along the coast to Gaans Baai and boat trip is a wonderful experience even if you choose not to partake in the actual cage dive. You will be able to view the sharks from the top deck of the vessel.

Walk To Freedom Tour Half Day

No easy road to freedom’ was a central theme in most of the Mass Democratic Movement’s campaigns, from the early days through to the late 1980s. Any understanding of present day conditions in South Africa is greatly enhanced by looking at past injustice, the legacy of the struggle and the promise of reconstruction and development initiatives under way at present. Freedom has not come easy. This tour offers a wealth of insight into South African history. It includes a brief educational introduction to Cape Town, one of the world’s most varied and sought-after cities.

The Bo-Kaap

A look at the picturesque ‘Malay Quarter’, a dynamic, living museum and home to the oldest mosque in the Southern Hemisphere. We discover the unique culture, lifestyle and personality of the Cape Muslim community and their contribution to South Africa’s development.

District Six

As a result of the Group Areas Act, 60 000 Capetonian families were forcibly removed from this once vibrant area between 1966 and 1982. The District Six issue remains crucial. We examine the now desolate area, Zonnebloem, which was District Six and visit the living museum which attempts to represent and recapture District Six in various ways – as a fine-spun tapestry of communal life torn apart but not forgotten.

Cape Arts and Culture

Explore the aesthetic production of South Africa, Africa and further afield whilst learning about the history and culture of art in the Cape. The programme boasts awe-inspiring scenery along the Cape Peninsula. Magnificent beaches, breath taking views and picturesque coastal villages are to be seen along the way.

This fun filled full day adventure takes you through the basics of sand boarding to cruising down the dunes at high speeds that will get your adrenaline flowing! This is followed by a high powered guided sand dune quad bike experience where you can speed up, down and along the face of the dunes!
Morning transfer to the Atlantis sand dune. You will then receive a safety briefing. After your sand boarding experience, break for lunch (packed) before the quad biking begins.

Cape of Good Hope Cycling Tour

For the energetic traveler who appreciates nature, this tour offers an alternative to simply watching the scenic splendour of the Cape Peninsula pass you by, allowing you time to cycle a section of the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve.

Cape Coast and Whales in Aug to Nov

August to November is usually the best time to see the Southern Right Whale in our waters. Walker bay’s Hermanus is an ideal place for whale watching. These mammals, which often come as close as 50 meters from the shore, are given to displays of breaching, spyhopping and courtship rituals.

Wine Country on Horse Back or Quad Bike

Cape City Tour

Situated below Table Mountain, Devil’s Peak and Lion’s Head, Cape Town offers a rich cultural and industrial heritage, grand splendour and an assurance of activity and excitement at the V&A Waterfront. Including all the ‘must-sees’ of any Cape Town day tour, this option is a geographical and cultural extravaganza, showing you Cape Town, from its historical beginnings to the dazzling modern shopping malls of the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront.

The tour commences with a tour of Table Mountain (weather permitting; cable car fee not included). In the city itself, we visit the Company Gardens, the S. A. Museum, the Castle of Good Hope and the vibrant and arty flea market, Greenmarket Square. We take a trip through the picturesque Bo-Kaap.

Table Mountain (Cable Car fee not included in cost due to variable cost) By the late 1870’s, several of Cape Town’s more prominent citizens had suggested the introduction of a railway line to the top of Table Mountain. Plans to implement a proposed rack railway got under way but the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer war put a halt to these efforts. By 1912, with a strong desire to gain easy access to the top of Table Mountain, the Cape Town City Council commissioned an engineer to investigate the various options for public transport to the top. The new cableway was officially opened on 4 October 1997, the anniversary of the original launch, almost 70 years previously.

The Company Gardens The Company Gardens have been described as ‘an oasis of calm in the city rush’, and with the trees, the squirrels and lunch-hour love birds it’s easy to forget that you’re in the middle of one of Africa’s most important cities. Spots of interest include a sundial dating from 1787, a Saffron Pear Tree (believed to be South Africa’s oldest cultivated tree), a statue of Cecil John Rhodes, a rose garden and pools with brightly coloured fish. The South African National Gallery, the South African Museum and the Planetarium are also in close proximity.
