Day 1:           Elewana Arusha Coffee Lodge, Arusha

Day Itinerary

Welcome to Tanzania!
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) our Representative will welcome you and you will be chauffeured to The Arusha Coffee Lodge. Here you will enjoy a complimentary upgrade to one of our 12 Plantation Suites.

Tanzania

The name Tanzania conjures up images of wildebeest stampeding across vast savannah, rain forests teeming with monkeys and birdlife, and great plains brimming with legions of game. All of these natural wonders and more are on offer in this exceptionally diverse African nation. Visitors typically visit Tanzania to partake in at least one of the four well known Tanzanian tourist experiences: a relaxing seaside vacation on the picturesque island paradise of Zanzibar, an underwater tour of some of the world’s most renowned dive sites around the gorgeous Spice Islands, a safari adventure in some of Africa’s most impressive game reserves, or a hiking excursion around Mount Kilimanjaro National Park. Whichever of these incredible holidays you choose, you will undoubtedly be welcomed by some fabulously friendly and peaceful inhabitants who, despite being divided into 120 different ethnic groups and cultures, live in harmony with one another and provide some of the most wonderfully exotic local cuisine you could imagine. With all of this diversity on offer, the most difficult part of your Tanzanian holiday experience is likely to be deciding where to go!

Arusha

Arusha is the safari capital of Tanzania – nestled below Mt. Meru and close to Mount Kilimanjaro. From Arusha there are options to head  to Lake Manyara, Tarangire and Ngorongoro National Parks and from there it’s a short trip to the Serengeti. Arusha was built by the Germans as a centre of colonial administration because of the temperate climate.

Day 2:           Elewana Tarangire Treetops, Tarangire National Park

Day Itinerary

After breakfast and a briefing on your Safari, enjoy a Coffee Tour on the plantation. After an Alfresco Lunch in the gardens of the lodge you will be chauffeured to Arusha Airport, gateway to the flying safari in Tanzania. Time to board the Safari Executive Grand Caravan. Your Safari will now take to the Air for your 20-minute flight to Kuro Airstrip in Tarangire National Park. On arrival at the airstrip, the Tarangire Treetops team will meet you for a game drive in Tarangire National Park ending in Treetops’ Private Reserve. You will arrive at Tarangire Treetops in time for sundowners.

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park is known for having the greatest concentration of wildlife outside of the Serengeti eco-system. Named after the river that crosses through it, this park at 1,100 square miles located southwest of Arusha, is sometimes sadly missed by those heading for the more well known of the National Parks in Tanzania. Yet we can highly recommend it for its elephant migration, quiet authentic atmosphere and fantastic birding opportunities. During the dry season, the river is the only source of water for many animals, with thousands migrating to it from the nearby Lake Manyara National Park. The landscape here is diverse, with a mix of habitats that are unique to the area and not found anywhere else: hilly landscapes are dotted with vast numbers of baobab trees, dense bush and high grasses. Herds of up to 300 elephants congregate here, whilst migratory wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala and eland can also be seen, with the accompanying predators following along behind. On drier ground you find the Kori bustard, the heaviest flying bird; ostriches, the world’s largest bird; and small parties of ground hornbills blustering like turkeys.

The park is also famous for the termite mounds that dot the landscape. Those that have been abandoned are often seen to be home to dwarf mongoose.

The swamps, an oasis of green year round, are where you will find over 550 bird species, the most breeding species in one habitat anywhere in the world. It is a birder’s dream with frequent sightings of yellow-collared lovebirds, which can be seen during a game drive alongside the river.

Tarangire’s pythons climb trees, as do its lions and leopards, lounging in the branches where the fruit of the sausage tree disguises the twitch of a tail.

Tarangire National Park is transected by the Tarangire River which in the dry season becomes a life source for an abundance of animals, including thousands of elephant. The lush swamplands are home to one of the largest populations of breeding birds, and 550 species of bird have been recorded within the park’s boundaries. The red earthed and white-grassed landscape of Tarangire is punctuated by magnificent baobab trees and termite mounds, and is home to a myriad of animals.

Enjoy the offerings of Tarangire National Park on a game drive with an expert Elewana guide. Elewana Tarangire Treetops is a short 45 minute drive from the entrance of the national park, however being located in a wildlife area adjacent to the park your game drive begins as soon as you are in the car.

Take a guided walk around the workings of the coffee plantation to see how the coffee is grown, harvested, dried, and produced into the aromatic coffee that we drink every day, culminating in that all-important coffee tasting!

Day 6:           Elewana Serengeti Pioneer Camp, Central Serengeti

Day Itinerary

After breakfast, transfer to Lake Manyara and safari through the lake en-route to the airstrip. After lunch you will be driven to Manyara airstrip for your onward flight to the Serengeti, where you will stay at either Serengeti Pioneer Camp or Serengeti Migration Camp.
The choice of Camp will be made in advance of your arrival to Tanzania with the decision based on which location will provide the optimum game-viewing opportunities. Both Camps provide exceptional accommodations and are located close to the migratory path of the Wildebeest Migration. However each Camp benefits from resident wildlife – all-year round.

Central Serengeti

The Serengeti together with Kenya’s Masai Mara Game Park form Africa’s most famous wildlife park. The image of acacia trees on an endless grass plain epitomises Africa for many, and then add a Masai warrior and some cattle to the picture and the conversation need go no further. The annual wildebeest migration through the Serengeti and the Masai Mara is the largest mass movement of land mammals on the planet – with more than a million animals following the rains. You may encounter it in the Central Serengeti at certain times a year. But that is not where the game viewing ends; large prides of lions, elephants and giraffes in grasslands, gazelles and eland to mention but a few. Aside from traditional vehicle safaris, hot-air ballooning over the Serengeti plains has become almost essential and you can even do a horseback safari.

Game Driving

Elewana Serengeti Pioneer Camp’s prime location allows guests to be in the midst of the drama of the annual Great Migration calving season, which occurs January – March. An evolutionary phenomenon, in the short span of just a few weeks some 400’000 calves are born while the herds reside in the Southern Serengeti region. The event attracts numerous predators, and visitors to the area have the opportunities to witness one of the grandest shows in nature.

When the herds of wildebeest and zebra have left on their journey back north, what remains in the area is an abundance of wildlife and excellent game viewing year-round. The Serengeti is famed for its Big 5, and guests to Serengeti Pioneer Camp will be treated to some of the best game viewing opportunities in East Africa.

Bush Meals

Take a breakfast or lunch hamper on a game drive and enjoy a delicious gourmet meal while taking in the views over the Serengeti.

Lake Magadi

Moru Kopjes

A rocky outcrop with great historical significance to the Maasai people, Moru Kopjes features ancient maasai paintings on many of its boulders. Another fascination of the kopje, are the gong rocks, a geological phenomenon of rocks that produce musical sounds when hit, which were used as a communication tool by the Maasai people.
